Background

The Chainsmokers featuring American singer Halsey were at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Closer’. The song stayed at the top spot for 12 consecutive weeks and topped the charts in more than ten countries. The song went on to become the first song to spend 26 weeks in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also became only the second song in the history of the Hot 100 chart to spend 32 weeks in the top ten of the chart.

South African prime minister and architect of apartheid assassinated South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd is stabbed to death by a messenger during a parliamentary meeting in Cape Town. The assailant, Demetrio Tsafendas, was a Mozambique immigrant of mixed racial descent—part Greek and part Swazi. As minister of native affairs and later as South African leader, Verwoerd oversaw the introduction and application of South Africa’s racist apartheid policies.
